Boris Johnson addressed the issue of flooding in the town during PMQs, saying he had "every sympathy" for residents affected by it.

And he suggested a solution may be on the horizon for two of the hardest hit areas, Sandon Road and Sandyford Brook.

Stafford has been blighted by flooding for years, with businesses forced to close and residents homes regularly damaged during storms. Parts of the town have been badly hit over the past week.

The matter was raised by Stafford MP Theo Clarke, who has is calling for a Flood Control Centre to be opened in the town.

She told the PM: “Over the last week there has been, yet again, very significant flooding in Stafford.

"Unfortunately my constituents in Penkridge, Central Stafford and Bishops Wood are regularly experiencing the disruption and distress that flooding causes."

Ms Clarke urged the PM to commit to her campaign for a Flood Control Centre that residents can call directly, "which will provide 24/7 assistance for my constituents affected by flooding".

In response Mr Johnson said: "I've every sympathy for the residents of Stafford who have been affected by flooding in the latest bout.

"What I can say... is that the Environment Agency is working hand in glove with her local authority to find a particular solution to the flooding in Sandon Road and Sandyford Brook."

Part of Sandon Road near the town centre has regularly been hit by flooding over recent years, wrecking residents’ homes and affecting businesses.

The town centre and other areas were struck multiple times in 2020, while the misery has continued into 2021 with Storm Christoph.
