Mourners were shocked to discover the name plates of their loved ones strewn on the soil at Rowley Regis Crematorium.

Lynn Gilbert, who went to the crematorium to visit her mother's plot, said the scene resembled a "building tip."

"I've just been to Mom's plot at to find all the plaques with loved ones name on all scattered like a building tip," she said.

"No one will know where there loved ones ashes are, and why wasn't all the plaques put safe?"

Sandwell Council said four rose name plate memorials had become displaced at the cemetery's Rose Garden.

Other mourners took to social media to vent their frustration.

Charlotte Emma Field said: "I was there yesterday and where my grandads' ashes were it was a disgrace. People's thing were thrown everywhere."

Photographs on social media showed plaques and flowers lying across the soil at the Powke Lane site.

Upsetting

Laura Harris said: "Oh my God how disrespectful. That's my names on one of the pics. My dad's going up now to kick off and demand they put CCTV as it's not the first time this has happened."

Councillor Maria Crompton, deputy leader, Sandwell Council, said: "Four rose name plate memorials in the Rose Garden at Rowley Regis Crematorium have recently become displaced, we are not sure how this has happened but possibly due to recent dry weather.

" This was brought to our attention on social media. Our team have therefore put them back into position.

"We understand this might be upsetting for family’s when visiting the garden therefore, we will routinely check the rose garden to ensure they and other memorials are positioned as they should be.

"There is no evidence to suggest any vandalism has taken place with any memorials in the garden.

"We have CCTV installed in that area which to help ensure family’s memorials continue to be safe."
