Woman escapes serious injury as car overturns in Bilston crash

A driver escaped serious injury today when she lost control of her car which hit two sets of traffic lights before landing on its roof.

Motorists were caught up in delays following the collision in Bilston after the road was closed for allow emergency vehicles access.

The crash happened in Millfields Road, close to the former Spring Road Social Club, just after 8.30am, affecting traffic heading towards towards Wolverhampton.

Police, fire and ambulance services were sent to the scene at the junction of Village Way.

Bilston firefighters tweeted:

Watch commander John Wildman, of Bilston Fire Station, said the driver was already out of her vehicle when they arrived and being checked by paramedics.

Crews cordoned off the damaged traffic lights before moving the upturned Nissan Qashqai. No other vehicle was involved.

Mr Wildman said: "The driver was heading towards Wolverhampton on Millfields Road when she collided with a double set of traffic lights, about three or four metres apart, flattening both of them.

"The car was on its roof but the driver was out of the vehicle. Although she didn't appear to be badly injured, she was quite badly shaken and distressed.

"We made the car safe and pushed it on to chevrons where it was not in the way. My main concern was any potential danger from the exposed electrics in the damaged traffic lights so we taped off the area. "

The police recovered the overturned car.

The driver, a woman in her 40s, was treated for a leg injury and shock. The road reopened at around 9.15am.
