Firefighters captured the moment a torrent of water was fired into the sky leaving onlookers this afternoon.

The hydrant was damaged in Vauxhall Road, in the Nechells area of the city.

West Midlands Fire Service posted a video showing the water leak.

Severn Trent Water sent engineers to work with the fire service to stem the leak.

Spokeswoman Ria Gaffney said: "As our teams arrived, we found that a third party had damaged our hydrant causing water to escape.

"The fire service were also on site and between us we were able to stop the water from escaping.

"When our hydrants are operated incorrectly, this can lead to damage to the hydrants, loss of supply or discoloured water for our customers, so it's really important that they're used correctly and we're made aware of any problems as soon as possible."
