Crews were called to Moor Street industrial estate just before 6pm yesterday. The fire involved discarded pieces of wood and other building rubble.
A fire service spokesman said it was a deep-seated fire in a pit that had been left to smoulder and had got out of hand.
Watch commander David Hinds, of Brierley Hill fire station, said crews returned today to dampen down at the site again.
"It's a pit in the rear yard of a recycling plant used for controlled burning but but in this case it had got out of control," he said. "We kept a check on it over 24 hours to make sure it was completely out."
