Girl, 3, dies after being hit by car in Birmingham

A three-year-old girl has died after she was hit by a car in Birmingham.

Police said the girl, who was on a bike, was crossing Chester Road with her mother when they were hit by a Volkswagen Passat just after midday on Wednesday.

They were rushed to hospital but despite the best efforts of medical staff the young girl died from her injuries that evening.

Her mother suffered serious injuries but remains in a stable condition. The driver of the car was not arrested but is assisting the police with their investigation.

Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the West Midlands Police Collision Investigation Unit said : "This is obviously a horrendous set of circumstances for anyone to comprehend and officers from our dedicated Family Liaison Unit continue to support the family.

"I am aware there have been rumours circulating in the community with regards to what happened. I can confirm that the car involved did stop at the scene and was not a stolen vehicle.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of public that assisted at the scene and have provided so much information to assist with our investigation."

Anyone who hasn't spoken to police and has any information is asked to call the Collision Investigation Unit on 101.
