The front bumper of the black Vauxhall people-carrier was ripped off in the collision which happened around 4.54pm today while the front driver's side tyre was ripped from its wheel.

Bricks smashed from a wall were scattered across a driveway of a home in Lichfield Road, Pelsall, where the incident took place.

The man, thought to be around 50 years old, was coherent and talking to ambulance crews before he was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital, but emergency services could not confirm the full extent of his injuries.

Council highways staff had to be called out to treat oil which had leaked from the car as well as make the lamppost safe as it had sustained a heavy impact.

Watch Commander David Foley from Bloxwich Fire Station which attended said: "We had a call at 16.54 to Lichfield Road in Pelsall. It was an RTC involving one car into a wall.

"When we got there we found the driver was a single male who was in the back of the ambulance before we arrived.

"He was dealt with and taken to Walsall Manor Hospital.

"The car left the road went on to the pavement, struck a wall, a bollard and came to rest on a lamppost."

He added: "We were there approximately for 35 minutes making the vehicle safe. We had to mark it with a sticker stating there was an undeployed airbag.

"We also called highways to put sand on the road and make the lamppost safe.

"Police attended to take a few details but the driver was insured. I don't think there was anything untoward there.

"It was a mobility car."
