Experts were called to examine the find, which was made shortly before 10am by members of the River Stour Clear Water Project.
It was discovered under a mattress in Ludge Bridge Rook, off Wollescote Road, Wollescote.
Officers closed Wollescote Road as a precautionary measure, and drivers were urged to avoid the area.
But at around 2pm, the all-clear was given and the road was opened again when it was confirmed the item was in fact harmless.
