Fire crews from Stourbridge and Brierley Hill were called to the house in Smallshire Way, Stourbridge, at around 3.30pm.

A man, woman and the child had managed to leave the house by the time officers arrived.

The man was suffering the effects of inhaling smoke.

The fire was contained within the bedroom and firefighters used breathing equipment to reach the blaze and extinguish it.

Watch Commander Brian Morris, of Stourbridge Fire Station, said: "The three-year-old was playing with the gas ring ignitor. It was one which produced a full flame rather than just a spark.

"There were a pile of clothes nearby and these were set alight.

"There were three people in the house at the time and fortunately none suffered any injury in the fire. They were already outside and did not need to be rescued."

Mr Morris said the fire had damaged a window at the property but had not caused any serious damage to the property.
