A quick-thinking concierge has been praised by firefighters for spotting the fire.

He was on his rounds when he smelt smoke and traced it to a top floor flat at Lane Court, Whitmore Reans, at around 6.30am. Crews from Merridale Street and Fallings Park fire stations cut through the high security front door to gain access.

Watch Commander Tony Bucknall said: "The occupant was asleep on the floor and had left a pizza in the cooker which caught fire. The message here is do not drink and cook."

The occupant was not injured.
