They were alerted to the fire by the smoke alarm at their home in Penn Road, Wolverhampton at around 9am yesterday.

Fire crews went to their aid and led the couple, who were believed to be in their 20s, outside of the flat.

Watch commander John Wildman from Bilston said when crews arrived the couple had shut themselves in their ensuite bathroom to protect themselves from the smoke.

The crews used breathing apparatus to enter the flat, which is in a low rise block, and helped lead to couple to safety through the front door of the property.

An ambulance was called and the couple were checked over by paramedics. They had suffered minor smoke inhalation but did not need to go to hospital for treatment.

It's believed an electrical fault with the dishwasher caused it to catch on fire.

The fire gutted the kitchen causing damage to the sink area and kitchen cupboards. The dishwasher was removed from the kitchen for safety.

A crew from Wolverhampton remained at the scene for around an hour after the fire was extinguished dampening down and clearing up some of the debris.

Sallyann Bannister, 19, who lives in Penn Road, said she had seen the fire engines arrive out the flats while walking her dog.

"It's a horrible thing to happen but I'm glad they are not hurt," she said.
