Residents heard a loud crash as the beech tree, thought to be more than 100 years old, fell in Great Barr.

Police arrived to direct traffic as the tree blocked the junction of Hamstead Road and Heather Road at around 5pm.

Commuters and buses faced delays as police officers tried to keep traffic flowing in the busy road, off Newton Road.

One resident who did not wish to be named said: "It was such a huge tree that it was so lucky no-one was driving past at the time as you shudder to think what might have happened."
