Firefighters were called to the garages in Saltwells Road, Netherton, Dudley at 5.22pm yesterday after a passer-by saw smoke and flames coming from the building.

Ten firefighters tackled the blaze, managing to extinguish it within 10 minutes before it could take hold.

Firefighter Jamie Law said: "When we got there we found that someone had gained access to the back of a garage and started a fire. From what we saw it suggests an arson attack. If we hadn't got there quickly enough it could have been a lot worse."

James Stuart who lives opposite the garages said: "The fire was quite intense but the firefighters arrived quickly and put the fire out in a few minutes. The garages have been empty for quite a while, they are a real eyesore."
