Crews were called to help the man who was stuck on the railings by St James's Church in Bridgnorth Road, Wollaston at just after 1.30am.

Firefighters from Stourbridge used a saw to cut through the metal post to free him. While the firefighters worked, ambulance staff provided pain relief to the man.

After being cut free, he was taken to Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley for further treatment.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a man impaled on a metal fence. Part of the fence was cut away before the man, believed to be in his 30s, was treated by ambulance staff for an injury to his thigh.

"The patient was stabilised at the scene before being taken to Russells Hall Hospital for further assessment and treatment."

Early-morning dog walkers today spoke of their shock. They believe the man may have been trying to take a short cut.
