Baby in buggy injured in Great Barr crash
A baby who was thrown from a pushchair after it was struck by a car is recovering.
The baby boy was originally thought to have suffered serious head injuries, but police have revealed they are not as serious as first feared.
Witnesses said a mother had been attempting to cross Walsall Road in Great Barr with her child moments before the crash.
The baby was treated by ambulance crews at the scene in Walsall Road, near the junction with Old Walsall Road, before being taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital.
The route was closed between the Scotts Arms junction and the former Clifton Cinema from 4.45pm while an investigation took place to piece together what happened. The road had re-opened fully by 9pm.
Residents living nearby spoke of their shock after the accident.
Mother-of-three Susan Lewis, 42, of Calshot Road said: "I was walking back from the bank when I heard the screech of brakes and a woman screaming. I knew something was wrong. Lots of people came out of the houses to see what was happening.
"It was just horrible. My thoughts are with the little one and the family."
Car mechanic Wayne Fenton, 26, said: "It's terrible. I hope the baby is ok. I heard they were crossing the road and the driver hadn't seen them. There have been a lot of accidents on this road and a child is now in hospital, it's awful."
Melanie Yeomans, 32, of Old Walsall Road, said: "It's very sad. I feel sorry for all involved. The family must be beside themselves with worry."
West Midlands Ambulance Service said it had received several 999 calls after the crash.
Spokeswoman Claire Brown said: "Crews arrived to find a baby who had reportedly been thrown from a push chair following a collision with a car. An off duty nurse was providing first aid to the youngster.
"The baby had suffered a serious head injury and the ambulance crew quickly commenced treatment on scene before taking the baby to Birmingham Children's Hospital by land ambulance on blue lights and sirens.
"Medics were pre alerted to arrival of the baby."
