Residents living near the A460 by Laney Green were advised to keep their windows and doors shut as a precaution.
The route stretches between Junction 11 of the M6 at Cannock and the Junction T8 of the M6 toll and police closed both motorway slip roads as a precaution.
Originally it was thought there had also been a chemical spill as the trailer which caught fire contained plastic cartons with chemicals in. Firefighters from Cannock were called to tackle the blaze which was put out shortly after 1pm. The A460 was reopened to drivers shortly after 1.15pm.
