The driver of the Toyota Avensis was confirmed dead at the scene in Wednesbury Road after suffering a head injury in the smash when his car went down an embankment.

The accident happened at around 4.45am near the railway bridge and the road was closed in both directions for more than three hours.

This was to allow for police investigations along the busy road between Walsall town centre and Palfrey.

The road was closed at the junctions with Bescot Crescent, Regal Drive and Milton Street but was able to reopen by 8.30am.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

The identity of the dead man has not been revealed at this stage.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene but were unable to save him.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Suzie Fothergill said: "On arrival at the scene crews found a single vehicle that had left the carriageway and had come to rest on an embankment.

"The driver, a man, had sustained a significant head injury.

"Sadly, despite best efforts of emergency service personnel nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed deceased at the scene."

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Gina Lycett confirmed police were called to Wednesbury Road at the junction of Bescot Crescent at 4.45am today.

She said: "A man believed to be the driver of a Toyota Avensis, died at the scene.

"There are not believed to be any other vehicles involved."

She added Wednesbury Road had to be closed at the junctions with Bescot Crescent, Regal Drive and Milton Street to allow for a thorough examination of the scene.

An ambulance, rapid response vehicle, paramedic area support officer and Hazardous Area Response Team were dispatched.

Viyja Kainth, vice chairman of Palfrey & Caldmore neighbourhood watch and residents group, said it was the latest in a series of accidents along the road.

"Our condolences go to the family," he said. "There are quite a few accidents happening in the area and it needs to be addressed.

"That is a very dangerous spot and it is a very busy road."
