Paramedics were called to Hurst Lane in Tipton at 1.50pm yesterday and originally thought the man had hit a wall near the junction with Sedgley Road West.
It later emerged that the man, thought to be in his 50s or 60s and from Bloxwich, had rested his bike against the wall and then collapsed.
Ambulance Service spokesman Steve Parry said: "Despite the efforts of ambulance crews at the scene, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene."
