The offenders targeted the Elliott Hire yard off Shaw Street containing hundreds of the buildings last night.
Three fire engines were called by residents who spotted the plumes of smoke bellowing into the sky at 11.30pm. The crews were there until about 2.30 this morning.
Firefighter Phil Richards said: "It was a really hard fire to put out. The buildings were metal framed but the bases were made of wood. It took a long time to get it under control."
It is thought the yard was used to store the portable buildings for hire purposes.
No-one was injured in last night's fire.
