Injured driver taken to hospital after head-on crash
A driver was taken to hospital with leg injuries after two cars crashed on a major route in South Staffordshire.
A red Fiat Punto and a black Ford Fiesta collided near Sandhills Day Nursery close to Oaken.
The road was blocked for nearly two hours following the accident at 2pm yesterday, causing long tailbacks to Wolverhampton and Newport along Holyhead Road.
It is the major route linking Wolverhampton to Newport and has been the scene of numerous crashes.
Following yesterday's smash, the male driver of the Punto, aged in his 20s, was taken to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton with a leg injury. A man and woman inside the Fiesta were checked over by paramedics at the scene but did not need hospital treatment.
The crash caused delays for parents collecting their children from Sandhills Nursery.
Nursery nurse Leanne Roberts, 24, of Pendeford, said: "We could see the flashing lights of the ambulance just after 2pm and the long queues along the road.
"Parents were phoning in saying they were just around the corner but stuck in the traffic. Then the air ambulance landed in the field next to us which got the children excited but it wasn't used.
"The paramedics went round with a stretcher but came back with no-one.
"We were expecting a few problems with delays in collections but it was nothing major."
Firefighters cut off the roof of the Punto so the driver could receive medical treatment.
Officers from Staffordshire Police directed traffic and helped highway officials from Staffordshire County Council clear debris from the scene.
