Firefighters from the town's station were called to the house on Cornwall Drive in the Brandhall area at 5.20pm yesterday.

West Midlands Fire Service Group Commander Nigel Sowden said: "They quickly established a pan had been left unattended on the stove."

An elderly woman was led to safety by fire fighters. She was checked by an ambulance crew at the scene as a precaution, Mr Sowden added.

Oldbury crew commander Richard Jones said the elderly woman had fallen asleep.

He added the kitchen suffered only smoke damage.
