Wednesbury van accident boy, 13, in coma say police

A 13-year-old schoolboy who was in a collision with a van in Wednesbury is in a coma, police said today.

The youngster, named as Wodensborough Community Technology College pupil James Birks, is receiving treatment at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The accident, in which a 10-year-old boy was also injured, happened in High Bullen at 5.15pm on Wednesday.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Deb Edmonds said: "The 13-year-old boy is in a critical but stable condition. He is in a coma."

Witnesses to the crash said the boys had been crossing the A461 High Bullen on a bike and a scooter. The boys were airlifted to hospital. The driver of the white Transit van was uninjured.

No arrest or charge has been made.
