The officers, from the Central Motorway Police Group, were on routine patrol on Wolverhampton Road in Cookley when they stopped the truck at 7.10pm yesterday.

But as they pulled up behind the recovery lorry, the driver put it into reverse and rammed the traffic car before speeding away towards Wolverhampton, police revealed today. Motorway officers, as well as the force helicopter, were sent to the area as the truck tried to get away crossing two county borders into Staffordshire and the West Midlands.

By 7.15pm the vehicle had been abandoned on Coopers Bank Road in Lower Gornal.

Three men aged 26, 27 and 35 from the Kingswinford area were arrested on suspicion of theft.
