Father-of-three Dale Crowley today said he "did not know where the strength had come from" to lift the car off the driver, who was seriously injured in the road accident in Coseley.

The 33-year-old was the first on the scene, along with his partner Lisa Flavell, following the early morning crash outside his home in Siddons Road.

The car, a Peugeot 406, had collided with a lamppost and a garden wall before coming to a stop in the middle of the street.

A passenger who was in the car escaped with only minor injuries but when Mr Crowley rushed outside after hearing a "huge bang" he realised another man was trapped under the car.

"I don't really know how I did it but I could see he was caught underneath the engine and I managed to lift the weight off him and push the car back around a metre or so," said Mr Crowley, who works in double glazing. "I suppose it was just the adrenaline and the fact I knew I had to help him.

"I managed to push the car back so he was free and then switched the engine off. Both of the doors had come off the car and it was really badly damaged."

Mr Crowley tried to search for a pulse and tried to check the man was still breathing by blowing on his face.

When he got a reaction, he put the driver into the recovery position and sat talking to him until paramedics arrived.

"I've never had any first aid training or things like that," he said. "I still don't really know how I did what I did."

Police, paramedics and firefighters from Tipton were all called to the scene following the crash at around 1.30am on Saturday.

The road was closed off while investigations were carried out. The injured man is believed to have been taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he was said to be in a serious condition.
