Driver cut free as BMW ploughs into barrier on busy road
A driver had to be cut free from his car after it crashed into a barrier today, closing part of a busy commuter route.
The vehicle crashed into the barrier on a busy road in Blackheath today, causing traffic tailbacks in the town centre.
The driver of the white BMW is thought to have got his foot stuck during the accident, on the A400 Henderson Way, and had to be cut free by firefighters.
Part of the road, at the junction with Oldbury Road, had to be closed.
Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene at 8am this morning.
An air ambulance was called but his injuries are not thought to have been serious.
West Midlands Ambulance ambulance spokeswoman Claire Thomas said: "We were called at 8am to reports of an RTC on Henderson Way.
"The Midland Air Ambulance from Cosford and an ambulance and two paramedics attended.
"We took a man with a leg injury to Russells Hall Hospital."
Witness, former Blackheath councillor Mary Docker said: "I did not see it but I saw the aftermath.
"From what I can understand it was a driver who got his foot stuck under the pedals and smashed into the railings.
"Firefighters had to cut the roof off to get him out. I would say the man was in his 20s."
A shop worker who did not want to be named and witnessed the crash said the car travelled up Oldbury Road and turned right and then hit the barrier.
She said: "I was at the traffic lights coming into work, when I saw the vehicle come around the corner and it went straight into the barriers.,
" When it first happened I looked over at the car, and the driver seemed to be moving their head, and they seemed fine, and older gentleman ran over to see if they were alright and the driver must have said they were OK because the man just walked away."
The road was reopened at around 9.40am.
