Six-year-old girl drowns after falling into Kidderminster canal

This is the first picture of the tragic six-year-old girl who died after plunging into a canal near Kidderminster.

Imie Harrison died after falling into the water near to the Wolverley Court Lock, on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, in Wolverley.

It is believed she was playing with her twin brother and two other six-year-olds.

She was rescued from the canal by emergency services and taken by police helicopter to Birmingham Children's Hospital at around 6.20pm yesterday. But the youngster, from the Springfield Park estate, later died.

West Mercia Police said officers had attended the scene in Springfield Park along with the fire service and an ambulance crew.

At a briefing today, Superintendent Kevin Purcell, police commander in North Worcestershire, said: "Our thoughts are with the family at this time. "They remain very traumatised by the loss of their daughter."

A police car remained at the scene today, blocking the road near The Lock pub and tearoom.
