Three injured as cars collide in Wolverhampton
Drivers along Wolverhampton's Penn Road were faced with disruption today after two cars smashed into each other and horses were found roaming free.
Three people were injured in the crash near to Lloyd Hill island just before 7am. A dark blue Astra collided with a grey Mondeo, a private hire taxi, opposite Foxlands Drive.
Emergency services attended the scene for two hours while two men in the taxi were cut free before being taken to New Cross Hospital. The driver of the taxi suffered a broken leg.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Chris Parry said: "He was given pain relief and immobilised with the use of a neck collar, leg splint and spinal board before being conveyed to New Cross Hospital.
"A further patient, believed to be in his 50s, was treated for leg and pelvic injuries and also taken to New Cross Hospital.
The dark blue Astra, whose male driver was treated at the scene, was travelling towards Wombourne and the taxi towards Wolverhampton when the collision took place.
The mangled cars were on the Wolverhampton side of the carriageway which was closed from Lloyd Hill island, forcing motorists to divert along Warstones Road.
At the opposite end of Penn Road, two horses were discovered roaming free near the junction with the ring road at around 7.30am.
The arrival of horses on the Penn Road also led to delays for drivers heading along Lea Road to the city centre.
Police were called to the scene and used their blue and white police tape to rein the horses in and lead them to safety in a nearby field. The horses were being cared for by a helpful resident while their owners were contacted.
Tettenhall Horse Sanctuary was contacted by police to see if the charity could be of any assistance. Owner Billy Wilson said: "The horses weren't abandoned – they would have just been grazing and moving from grass to grass." Office worker Ann Brown was on her way to work when she spotted the animals.
She said: "It's not something you see very often on the Penn Road so I was more than a little surprised.
"They looked as though they were out for a morning stroll."
Another driver Paul Beattie added: "It was unusual for there to be two incidents on the Penn Road on one morning.
"I just hope that everyone involved is OK."
