Lucky dog Leo rescued from icy Dudley pond

Siberian Husky Leo had lucky escape when firefighters plucked him from an icy pool. Emergency crews launched an inflatable dinghy into the pool in Dudley to reach the dog, stranded 50ft from the banks.

The one-year-old dog had crashed through the ice leaving it scrambling with its body halfway struck in the frozen water. He had been playing off the lead while on a walk with his owner Kelly Warren yesterday morning near the pond, off Himley Road. But she said the dog suddenly ran on to a snow-covered pool and fell through the ice.

Fire crews attending from Bilston and Dudley called in specialist water rescues crews to help with the dramatic 45-minute rescue. Firefighters jumped on board the nimble boat to reunite the dog with Kelly, aged 29, and her partner Kim Sin, 37.

Kelly praised firefighters for rescuing Leo, adding: "We took Leo to the vet afterwards and, luckily, he's fine. We think he went on the ice because it was covered with snow and it was impossible to tell where the edge was. Leo was just howling, because Huskies don't really bark like other dogs."

Fire service spokesman Neil Spencer said: "If a Siberian Husky can get into difficulties in this weather, then anyone can."
