Woman cut from car after Halesowen crash
Thick ice wreaked misery and mayhem on roads across the region today bringing a number of crashes.
A Ford Focus overturned on the A456 Manor Way, Halesowen at around 8.50am. A woman had to be cut free from the wreckage of her car by fire crews and taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
One lane of the dual carriageway was closed while firefighters worked. It re-opened at around 9.50am.
There were 10 gritting lorries sent out by Wolverhampton City Council at 6.30pm and 4.30am to cover 288 miles of roads in the city.
During rush hour, long queues built up on some of the main routes into the city centre including the A449 Stafford Road and Penn Road.
Plummeting temperatures led to icy conditions on roads and pavements - with forecasters warning there is more freezing weather to come.
Rain and snow turned to ice overnight as temperatures dropped to -2C (28F) and the Met Office has warned they could get as low as -6C (21F) tonight.
A car skidded on the ice crashing into the central reservation on the A41 Black Country New Road in Great Bridge at about 6.30am. No-one was injured but one lane of the carriageway was blocked.
Long queues were also reported on the A491 Stourbridge Road heading towards Hagley and the A34 around Junction 7 of the M6 for Great Barr.
Sandwell Council's nine grit lorries were out on the roads last night and this morning, covering 250 miles of roads. Sandwell's 3,700 Snow Champions have also been out on the streets.
The council has given out free snow shovels and 3kg tubs of salt to those who signed up to be Snow Champions.
