Twenty firefighters were called to tackle a blaze at an outbuilding attached to a Co-op store in Walsall.

A nearby resident raised the alarm when smoke was seen coming from the back of the building in Sutton Road last night. Crews from Walsall, Willenhall, Aldridge and Wednesbury were called just after 7pm.

Firefighters said they found a pile of rubbish on fire at the back of the shop, which had spread to an outbuilding, also behind the store, where stock is kept. The fire was out by 8.20pm.

Store staff were out by the time the crews got there, but there was initial concern someone might be living in the flat above, which was vacant. The fire damaged the roof of the outbuilding.
