A man suffered a head injury and passengers involved in a four-vehicle smash had a lucky escape in a series of car crashes in Sandwell.

The 21-year-old man was injured when his car left the road and ploughed into a brick wall outside a factory in Smethwick yesterday.

The man, who is believed to live in the area, had to be cut free from the grey Audi by fire crews before he could be treated by paramedics. Fire crews were called to Downing Street at 10am.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Birmingham, where he remains stable.

Paramedics and fire crews were also called to a four car crash at Cape Hill in the town at around 9.20pm yesterday. Paramedics checked the occupants of the vehicles but none had suffered serious injuries.

In a separate collision, paramedics and fire crews were called to a two-car smash between junction eight, near Great Barr, and junction nine, Wednesbury, on the M6 at 5.35pm on Saturday. The collision caused heavy traffic to build up. Two women and four dogs left their vehicle unaided. A man was given oxygen.

Meanwhile, in Birmingham, a 27-year-old man from Manchester died when his car collided with a barrier near to an entry sliproad for the M6 on the Aston Expressway shortly after 3am yesterday.
