A former headteacher has died after collapsing when three burglars conned their way into her Wolverhampton home.
A former headteacher has died after collapsing when three burglars conned their way into her Wolverhampton home.
The 90-year-old woman, named as Hester Mottershead, died today following the distraction burglary on her home. Police have launched a murder inquiry.
Three young men duped the pensioner into letting them into her home in Saxonfields, near the junction of Wrottesley Road, Tettenhall, claiming to be from the water board.
Detectives had today taped off the house and forensic teams sealed its front door as they searched for evidence.
It is not yet known if the men, who entered the house after claiming they needed to check pipes, managed to steal anything.
Miss Mottershead is believed to have been taken ill after the burglary, which happened at around 2.30pm yesterday. She was taken to New Cross Hospital, where she died this morning.
Police said the men did not attack the victim and are not thought to have used any force on her. A post-mortem was taking place this afternoon.
Miss Mottershead is belie ved to have retired from her job in the 1980s after working at both Wolverhampton Girls High School and the former Bilston High School.
Former Girls High School pupil and Wolves vice-president Rachael Heyhoe Flint, said today: "I'm aware she is part of the history of the school and this is very saddening news."
A neighbour, who wished not to be named, said today: "For a lady of 90 years to be taken away in an ambulan ce after something like this has happened, it's terrible."
He added five marked and three unmarked police cars were sent to the scene.
A 64-year-old neighbour added: "The first I heard of it was when a policeman came to my door. We are all very sad about it."
Police have asked for anyone with information to call them on 101.
