A passenger was taken to hospital today after the car he was in collided with a van on a busy Staffordshire road.

The accident happened in Hayes Way, Heath Hayes, at 6.15am today when a blue Peugeot and a white Vauxhall Astra van collided.

The passenger from the Peugeot was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire with suspected head injuries.

Bosses at the Highways Agency were also alerted over an oil spillage on the road.

The accident caused delays for motorists in the area.

A witness said: "Both vehicles looked badly damaged, and the windscreen of one was smashed.

"There was also a lady who appeared to be in her night dress directing traffic – even though there was a police officer there."

In March last year, Jason Evans, 26, of Hawthorne Crescent, Burntwood, was killed when a car he was travelling in overturned on the same road.
