Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust has announced plans to open two-form entry primaries in Wednesfield and Coseley.

Wednesfield Technology Primary – which the trust wants to be entirely carbon neutral – is expected to open at the site of the former Edward the Elder Primary School on Lichfield Road in September 2022.

Coseley Technology Primary is set to follow in September 2023.

A statement on the trust's website said: "These academies will provide a supportive learning environment for children and an education that will allow pupils to achieve beyond expectations.

"Every young person who accesses technology at our schools will know how to use it safely and responsibly to support and extend their learning."

The school in Wednesfield will see existing buildings upgraded, and comes after residents had raised concerns about the condition of the site.

'Fantastic'

Jane Stevenson, MP for Wolverhampton North East, said: "I am thrilled to see that a new primary school will be opening in Wednesfield from next September, and it is great that the derelict primary school buildings on Lichfield Road will be beautifully restored again.

"I know many of my constituents were sad to see the site in decline.

"This is also fantastic news for children and families in Wednesfield, where primary school places are in demand.

"I would like to thank Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust for taking these plans forward, and I am excited to learn that the new primary school will be carbon neutral."

Plans for Coseley Technology Primary were first unveiled in 2017. It was initially set to open the following year at the former Coseley School site.

Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust is based in Smethwick and has six schools in the Black Country, including West Bromwich Collegiate Academy, Tameside Primary Academy in Wednesbury and Shireland Technology Primary in Smethwick.

Earlier this week Ministers announced plans for a new secondary school in Wolverhampton as part of plans to build 21 new free schools across the country.
