The group from Walton Priory Middle School in Stone, Staffordshire, has beaten hundreds of other teams from across the UK to be named a Longitude Explorer Prize 2020 runner-up, winning £10,000 for their school.

Holly, Callum, Kah Yee and Phoebe, the members of Walton S-AI-lors were named runners-up of the national competition for young people at a virtual awards ceremony introduced by Science Minister, Amanda Solloway.

The team devised and developed ocean cleanup, a fleet of autonomous catamarans that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to travel the ocean searching out and scooping up plastic.

Despite the challenges of school closures and lockdown the finalists continued to work remotely to develop their ideas and produce prototypes.
