Rugeley school in appeal to meet 25,000 face shields goal
Dedicated staff at a school in Staffordshire have created more than 10,000 face shields for frontline workers.
A small team of teachers from the Hart School in Rugeley started creating the visors four weeks ago.
Rachael Sandham, vice principal, said: "I approached our local GPs to see if there was a need for PPE and they said they were overwhelmed and had a desperate need.
"A team of six of us from the school came in everyday over the Easter holidays and made 80 visors.
"We shared this on social media and we were inundated with requests from workers as far as Cardiff asking us to make more visors and it's just grown and grown from there.
"We set up a GoFundMe page with a target of £1,000 for materials and smashed that within 24 hours.
More Covid-19 coverage:
"We have had generous donations from Rugeley Town Council, Cannock District Council, Rugeley Lions, Freemasons and also two local businesses Transparent Box and Stoke Laser who have helped us with materials and manufacturing.
"In total we have raised around £18,000."
The visors have gone to more than 160 organisations, including care homes across Staffordshire, New Cross Hospital, Walsall Manor Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
After meeting their initial target the school now has a new target to produce 25,000 within the next two weeks.
The school is now appealing for an additional £5,000 so they can hit the new milestone.
Rachael added: "There is still a need for more visors and we will continue to keep producing them for as long as we can and as long as they are needed.
"We are really proud as a school we have had so many positive responses from the community and that is what keeps us going."
