City school closes for all pupils

A city school has closed its doors to all pupils in an effort to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

Smestow School had been open to vulnerable pupils and those whose parents are critical workers, but has now completely closed.

Students who still need to attend school will be looked after at Smestow's sister school, Wednesfield High, which is also part of the University of Wolverhampton Multi Academy Trust.

Interim head David Smith said: "At least one member of staff from Smestow School will be in attendance at Wednesfield, so that students have a familiar face to reassure them in an unknown environment.

"I understand that it may be more difficult to get your child to Wednesfield but in order to keep as many people as safe as possible, we believe this is essential."

Smestow staff are still contactable via telephone and email, he added.
