GALLERY: Competition and fun for all at Black Country School Games
Sport was the big winner as the Black Country School Games marked the end of six months of competition.
Since January, 4,500 young people had taken part in such competitions all over the region Black Country, with the top schools and competitors qualifying for the School main games.
A total of 1,800 children from 90 schools in Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton competed in nine sports, ranging from cricket and dodgeball to aquathon, as well as a mixture of swimming and running.
The event at the Walsall campus of the University of Wolverhampton was organised by Active Black Country, backed by Sport England.
It was supported by 200 young leaders, who offered support throughout the day on the different sports.
There was also representation from organisations such as Walsall FC, England Boxing, Penn Golf Club and Media Station.
For those pupils in attendance who were not competing in the games, a Change4Life trail and zone was set up. It gave pupils from the 22 schools the chance had run a Change4Life zone at their school to try their hand at different sports and activities, including judo, pentathlon and volleyball.
The day started with an opening ceremony, which was compered by Julian Jones from Heart FM. It featured welcome videos, a young ambassador oath and a dance performance from Windsor High School and Sixth Form. The event also helped to raise money for Smile for Joel, the official charity of the games. The charity was set up in memory of Joel Richards, who died in the terror attacks in Tunisia in 2015.
Joel was part of the organising committee of the first games in 2011
Now, four teams from different school all competing for the Joel Richards Black Country Schools Games Festival Cup.
After a day of competition, all played out in stunning weather, medal ceremonies took place for the winning schools.
