A Stafford primary school welcomed children back for the first time in more than a year today after it was shut down when a toxic gas made pupils ill.

Flash Ley, on Hawksmoor Road, was closed on October 2, 2015, when formaldehyde was discovered.

Headteachers Karan Williams and Kerri Fenton said it was great to be back in the 'heart of the community' upon the return of pupils who have been taught at Chetwynd Centre, Tillington Manor and Stafford Manor High since.

A statement said: "After being displaced for 15 months we are really excited to be back in the heart of our community.

"The staff have been working tirelessly to make sure the school environment is exciting and welcoming for the children's transition back to Flash Ley.

"We are looking forward to returning to a 'normal day', both academically, through extra-curricular clubs and providing our families with our extended services and wrap around 'Voyage' provision."

Investigations are still on-going as to the cause of the gas.

Bosses have confirmed the costs of the remedial work and subsequent legal fees are likely to top £1 million.
