Suzanne Stokes, mother of 13-year-old Daniel, was left horrified after claiming that last week he had been driven home from Tettenhall Wood special school, Regis Road, barefooted with hardly any clothes on.

The bus driver for the school was allegedly handed a towel by the teachers to cover Daniel as he travelled last Wednesday.

Suzanne, aged 45, said: "Daniel is autistic, non-verbal and has severe learning difficulties.

"The fact that he was just left to travel home in that state is disgusting.

"He sometimes thinks it's funny to take off his clothes, that's one of his behaviours.

"Staff should know this and know how to handle it properly.

"He was travelling with other children that obviously had to be moved around to accommodate him.

"I was mortified when he came off the bus barefoot and naked.

"How can a school, a special school, have let him travel like that?"

Ms Stokes, who was previously a governor at the school, has now resigned from her post.

"I'm keeping him off school," she said, "because I just don't think it's safe for him to go in.

"I just want other parents to be aware of what the school has done and how lackadaisical they have been about Daniel's privacy and dignity."

Kari Annson, assistant headteacher said: "We are aware of this alleged incident and a full investigation has been launched."

A spokesman for Wolverhampton council, which runs the school, said the authority was aware of the alleged incident.

"We are supporting the school in its investigation," he said. "As this is now underway, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."
