Bosses can now move head with proposals to redevelop the food court at the Millennium City Building, improve the main courtyard area and create better access to the back of the Wulfruna Building.

The campus in Wulfruna Street houses the university's main reception and the Arena Theatre.

Under the works, due to start next month, catering facilities at the Millennium City Building will be extended and improved while the courtyard area will also be landscaped and transformed to make it a more attractive environment for people who use the campus.

A total of four food outlets will feature in the food court, as well as a franchise cafe in a single-storey extension, complete with a frontage which can be opened up in warmer seasons. Access to the rear corner of the Assembly Hall Building, facing St Peters Square, will also be improved.

Vice-chancellor Professor Geoff Layer, said: "It's good news to receive planning permission and now we can start the transformation of this part of our City Campus. The investment will allow us to upgrade what we can offer to students, staff and visitors and offer them a welcoming experience.

"The courtyard area will also be landscaped making it into an attractive place that people want to come to and stay in. We want to provide first class facilities and surroundings for people to learn and socialise in."

Work is due to start next month with planned completion by the autumn.
