The papier-mache structure has been on display in the university's main courtyard, one of the busiest areas of the city centre campus. The aim is to encourage students to register to vote before the deadline on Monday.

Voters will pick who they want to serve as their MP on May 7, at which time students are sitting exams so are likely to be at their university residence, rather than their home address.

The University of Wolverhampton has over 20,000 students. And in a survey they were ranked in the top 10 most powerful student groups in the UK in the election as they fall into the marginal Wolverhampton South West constituency.

Zoe Harrison, President of the University of Wolverhampton Students' Union, believes many students do no know they can vote while at university.

She said: "We've been running an awareness campaign with the slogan 'don't be a mugwump' to encourage students to register as some don't realise they can do so at a university halls of residence address. This is particularly important as polling day is during exams. "
