In total, 26.3 per cent of teenagers nationwide scored an A or A* this year, down from 26.6 per cent in 2012.

However, the overall A* to E pass rate rose slightly by 0.1 per cent up to 98.1 per cent.

Around 300,000 students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland nervously headed to school today to pick up their grades, including thousands of teenagers waiting to learn their fate across the Black Country and South Staffordshire.

Among those celebrating were pupils and staff from Moreton Community School, in Bushbury, Wolverhampton, which has achieved the best A-level results in its history with 100 per cent passes.

Moreton's assistant head of five years Alison Ward, and head of post 16 studies for the past three, said: "It's a reflection of the dedication of staff and the hard work and positive attitude of pupils over the past two years."

Pupils at Aldridge School achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in their A-levels. Nearly a quarter of the grades achieved by teenagers at the Tynings Lane school were A* or A results.

In Walsall, The Black Country University Technical College was celebrating its first set of A-level results today.

The £9.5 million engineering college for 14- to 19-year-olds opened in place of the former Sneyd Community School in 2011.

And staff and students at Wolverhampton's Moreton Community School enjoyed their best-ever set of A-level results.

From last year's 99 per cent pass rate for pupils gaining A* to E grades, the Old Fallings Lane school in Bushbury, has gone on to record a 100 per cent pass rate for the first time.

Assistant head Alison Ward said: "It's a reflection of the dedication of staff and the hard work and positive attitude of pupils over the past two years."

Also among those celebrating were pupils and staff from the Q3 Academy in Great Barr which saw a 98.5 per cent pass rate this year.

Hayley Vernon-Freeth, 18, from Great Barr achieved two A's and a B and will study business management at Birmingham University.

She said: "I'm really happy I hadn't expected to do so well."
