A school in Sedgley has been placed into special measures following a damning Ofsted inspection, it emerged today.

Dormston School, in Mill Bank, has been judged as 'inadequate' with inspectors criticising teaching standards and achievement of pupils. Headteacher Stephanie Sherwood is leaving the school to be replaced by Ben Stitchman from September.

Inspectors slammed staff for failing to ensure students make enough progress with GCSE courses in Year 11.

They say standards are 'too low' in English and mathematics and 'too few' students gain five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C.

School governors were criticised for 'lacking understanding' over weaknesses at Dormston and failed to hold teachers to account. Dudley's education chief Councillor Tim Crumpton said the authority would help ensure standards for pupils were raised as quickly as possible.

"We will also ensure that extra resources are made available," he said.

Lead Ofsted inspector Simon Blackburn said in the report: "Teaching is inadequate because too much work is not well planned or appropriately matched to students' level of ability."
