£5m spent on supply teachers in Sandwell

More than £5 million has been spent on supply teachers at Sandwell schools over the last year, new figures show. The biggest spender was Holly Lodge High School in Smethwick, which paid out £311,695.

More than £5 million has been spent on supply teachers at Sandwell schools over the last year, new figures show. The biggest spender was Holly Lodge High School in Smethwick, which paid out £311,695.

Figures revealed under the Freedom of Information Act show between April 2011 and March 2012 primary, secondary and special schools in the borough spent almost £5.4m on supply teachers.

Holly Lodge head Ahson Mohammed said the outlay came from a combination of long-term illness and maternity cover.

The next biggest spender was Alexandra High in Tipton, forking out £259,818, while the Phoenix Collegiate Academy, which has sites in West Bromwich and Wednesbury spent £188,542.

The top spending primaries were Ryders Green Primary School in West Bromwich, which had a bill for £263,462; Yew Tree Primary in West Bromwich, which spent £127,028, and Oldbury's Causeway Green Primary, where £110,252 was paid out. The Orchard special school in Oldbury forked out £120,226.

The lowest spenders were Ferndale Primary in Great Barr and St Paul's CE Primary School in Tipton, who did not pay a penny.
