Two students from a Sandwell school, who won prestigious national education awards, enjoyed work placements at two of the country's most influential organisations.

Claire Guy and Ambi Ubhie, of Sandwell Academy, won the coveted internships after scooping top prizes at the Academy Excellence Awards, which recognises students for outstanding work.

Guy won the Mathematics award at the ceremony, which carried with it a £1,500 cash prize and a placement with the Department for Energy and Climate Control in Whitehall.

The student, who chieved a staggering 14 A*s and 4 A grades in her GCSE exams in August, worked with senior government advisors for the delivery of a new campaign targeting young people and schools, presenting her findings to senior representatives.

Ubhie was runner-up in the Technology category and won a work placement experience with British Sugar, where she spent the week shadowing the Managing Director and looked at all aspects of the engineering processes involved in the industry.

Simon Topper, Head of Sandwell Academy said "We are all extremely proud of Claire and Ambie. They are delightful young ladies and their success in the Academy Excellence Awards was a major national honour.

"These internships gave the girls an amazing opportunity to develop and demonstrate their abilities at the highest level."
