The headteacher of a Staffordshire primary school who was suspended in July has resigned from his post.

Parents have received a letter saying Trevor Hancock has quit following a change in personal circumstances and ill health.

In the short term, deputy head Robbie Walker will continue to be acting head of St Peter's Church of England Primary in Hednesford.

Robert Heath, who took over as chairman of governors following Mr Hancock's suspension has written to the parents of the 427 pupils to explain that Mr Walker will be supported by experienced head Sue Winson of Gentleshaw Primary School.

In his letter Mr Heath says: "The governors of St Peter's wish to thank him for his focused leadership and development of the school and wish him every success in the future."

Staffordshire County Council spokesman Richard Caddy said the local education authority had been informed of the resignation.
