A bid is set to be made for £9.7 million from the Department for Education to provide improved facilities at Hednesford's new Staffordshire University Academy.

The old Blake Valley Technology College in Marston Road is re-opening this week under its new name.

At tomorrow's special meeting of the cabinet of Staffordshire County Council, cabinet member for education and skills, Councillor Liz Staples, will recommend the bid be made to fund new buildings and refurbish some of the old ones.

The new academy is being sponsored by the university with the aim of starting construction work next March and all the work being completed by May 2014.
