A caring ethos and Christian values shine through at Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School in Wednesfield, according to headteacher Wenda Pearce.

Mrs Pearce says staff are dedicated to developing pupils socially and spiritually as well as academically.

"The school prides itself on its caring nature, providing nurture groups and one-to-one support," she said.

"We also ensure the children are aware of the needs of others, with many fundraising activities with contributions being made throughout the year to local, national and international charities."

She added staff have high expectations of all its pupils. Many improvements have been made at the school this year including new lockers for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children, new classroom furniture, playground equipment, laptops, bicycle shelters and extra reading books.

Money received from grants and raised by the Parents, Teachers & Friends Association as well as donations have paid for the new facilities.

The installation of the bike shelters has helped to encourage older pupils to cycle to school and help them become more environmentally aware, Mrs Pearce said.

This year the school has been selected to pilot the new Maths Makes Sense programme, which is already improving the children's maths skills and understanding.

The curriculum is further enriched by numerous themed weeks, including business enterprise, healthy lifestyles and world weeks.

The school has also extended its music curriculum in recent months, offering classes of children the chance to learn to play instruments.

As well as the opportunities given to children during the day, there is an extensive range of after-school activities, including rock drumming, keyboards, street dance, science, gardening, cookery and many sports.

Youngsters took part in the Food Dudes and Junior Citizenship programmes earlier this year, which further enhance the provision for the Every Child Matters programme.

Mrs Pearce admitted the new school term starting in September would be one to remember.

"September sees the start to a very special academic year for Corpus Christi, as we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary," she said.
