West Midlands and Staffordshire schools were today finding out if refurbishment or rebuilding will go-ahead as MPs accused the government of plunging education into chaos.

But there was relief in Wolverhampton as plans on replacing every secondary school in the borough were confirmed.

Education secretary Michael Gove has cut £5bn off the Building Schools for the Future programme.

Pupils in Staffordshire, Dudley, Walsall and Wyre Forest now look set to be stuck with outdated buildings.

However, Wolverhampton schools will get rebuilding because contracts with developers were signed two days before the General Election.

Two thirds of Birmingham's rebuild has been stopped or put on hold.

Walsall loses out on £100m for six schools and Darlaston and Shelfield academy projects and the University Technical College (UTC) planned for the site of Sneyd School are on hold.

Walsall Council leader councillor Mike Bird said: "I sincerely hope the minister will see the sense in having what will be one of the first urban colleges as a major step forward."

An emergency report goes to his cabinet meeting next week. Walsall North Labour MP David Winnick said: "The scheme locally is in chaos. They talk about some of the projects being up for discussion, but what does that mean?"

The developer behind Wolverhampton's project, inspiredspaces, is part of the city's construction giant Carillion and is working on schemes elsewhere.

The first phase of the project, rebuilding Highfields School and Penn Fields School and the co-location of the Kings School and Tettenhall Wood School, is set to begin at the end of this month with the new buildings opening in 2012.

Dudley was not in today's list. Its bid for £80m was rejected in March meaning no prospect of major works.
